The rulers of Portuguese built this mighty fort in 1612 ad to safeguard the attacks of enemies from the sea.The enemies were mainly the dutch or the warriors of marathas.
It takes almost 35 minutes to reach here from capital city of Panajim. The once you reach there you will see the ruins of may be watch tower of fort & the magnificent view of Arabian sea.and when you reach on the top you will find still working 4 storey lighthouse build by Portuguese rulers in 1864.this lighthouse is oldest of this kind in Asia.from the top on one side you can see the view of river mandovi meeting the Arabian sea & on the other side the famous stretch of scenic beaches of north Goa namely sinquerin ,calangute & bagha.
the fort has lots of fresh water springs & aguada in Portuguese means water ,hence the name Fort Aguada was derived.
today the fort is famous for Taj hotel a exotic 5 star beach resort.
