GOA-CHRISTMAS IN GOA

Hi again,
November & December are the two most important months in the calender of Goans.the preparations for the major festival Christmas starts in the month of November & culminates on 31 st DEC with new year eve.really fun & masti time with Santa in Goa.
the festivities starts with the feast of Church of Bom Jesus in old Goa.the pre dawn novenas starts from 23 rd Nov for which lots of devotees from adjoining areas gather here .the pre dawn atmosphere here is simply electrifying.the actual feast is on 3 rd DEC.
then comes the feast of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception on 8 th Dec at Panjim & Margoa.the people now are waiting for Santa Clause & their near & dear ones who are expected to reach homes for Christmas.Specially the old parents waiting for their children over the year.
i have seen this whole month of December here is period of get together & parties.you can see lots of smiling grand pas & grand moms.you will see the Santa Clause on every corner of business areas & small group of kinds singing Jingle Bells.this all creates the hype for Christmas.
Indeed very nice time to be in Goa.but the only problem is the availability accommodation & you need to plan at least 3 months in advance. So plan your trip next year to enjoy this fun & masti in Goa with Santa & ring the Jingle Bells.
Bye.

GOA EXPLORED-IFFI GOA 2007-INOX COURTYARD

Hi again,
the curtains for 38 th IFFI Goa 2007 are already down & the fanfare is over almost week back.but still this venue of INOX is very important for the Goans.Built in record 180 days with full mansoon on this is the 1 st multiplex in Panaji exclusively meant for the 35 th IFFI Goa 2004. And after IFFI 2004 was over this magnificent theatre was thrown open to Goans.
there are four screens with total seating capacity of 1272 where in you can enjoy the latest audio video equipments of international standards in the air conditioned comforts.the cafeteria, book shop & exhibition show cases are there for your further enjoyment in the hall.
the entire INOX Courtyard is very well maintained by the INOX Group & visitors are generally impressed by the neatness & cleanliness here.
open area around the theatre the courtyard is used for many exhibitions & festivals.the main festival being the Goan Wine Festival .let me tell you that you will not get any better venue than this for the Wine Festival.the atmosphere during the wine festival here is simply magical.
hope you will find some time to spend here during next visit to Goa.
Recently I visited Bangkok & Pattaya & I will write one post on this visit soon.

GOA EXPLORED-IFFI GOA 2007-KALA ACADEMY
Hi againThe 38 th International Films Festival of India thrown open by King Khan on 23 rd at Panaji,Goa in true Goan style at Kala Academy complex,i thought to write on this venue which is jewel of Panaji.
The Kala Academy complex is situated in the heart of the capital city on the bank of River Mandovi and surrounded by lush landscaped greenery & open area for other business purpose.
The main areas in Kala Academy Complex are
1.Main auditorium -Dinanath Mangeshkar Hall of approxly 900 seating capacity.
2.Art Gallery
3.Jury Room
4.IFFI office.
5.Open theater-Approxly 2500 seating capacity.
6.Viewing Rooms
7.Open Recreation block.
This unique complex is designed by none other than Goan Master Architect Mr Charles Correia. This entire complex was redone with minor changes for 35 th IFFI Goa.The above photograph is of that period. The audio & video equipments installed for this are of highest quality & latest. The Air Conditioning & other utilities were also redone in record time for 35 th IFFI Goa.
The outdoors of Kala Acdemy can be used for variety of businesses like Exhibitions,Expositions etc.The main out door attraction Darya Sangam is popular tourist joint on weekends.
I feel the importance of this complex is undervalued & if the Govt of Goa & Kala Academy wishes the complex can be marketed in more aggressive way to Bollywood & fetch tons of revenue.
So next time you visit Goa ,don't forget to spend some time at this master piece.
Bye.

IFFI GOA 2007-A MEGA EVENT OF GOA
Hi everybody
only 5 days to go before Goa throws open the 38 Th International Film Festival of India 2007,popularly known as IFFI GOA 2007 at Panajim the capital city.this being a truly mega event here i thought to write few posts on IFFI Goa 2007 though i am not in Goa this time.
the IFFI G0a 2007 will open on 23 rd nov & scheduled to close on 3 rd Dec 2007.The organisers DFF & ESG plans to showcase 36 films,21 features & 15 non feature films from allover the globe.Indias popular bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan will be present during the Inaugural function on 23 rd Nov.
so far almost 2700 delegates have registered for the IFFI Goa 2007 & this number is expected to rise further as last dated for registration is 20 th Nov.so please rush now.
this mega festival infuses life in generally slow life style of Goa.the glamour of international stars, popular bollywood stars ,the film bazaar, the road shows on the main road of the Panajim City & not to forget the beach cinemas yes we all are excited & so does the every other Goan.
i have enjoyed the last 3 IFFI s in Goa literally.and the first one from inside which is undoubtedly the best organised so far.next time we will deliberate on the various venues of IFFI Goa 2007 & we will close with my favourite the Beach Cinema.till then

GOA EXPLORED-FORT OF CHAPORA
Hi again
today we are visiting second important fort of Goa.
The Fort Of Chapora. This fort is next to my favourite beach of Goa ,the Vagator beach . I seen this this fort plenty of times from the beach & only twice visited the fort.
It takes almost 40 minutes from Panajim to reach here & once you trek up on the fort you will see the exotic view of Arabian sea & the stunning coast line of anjuna & vagator as it is situated atop a cliff on the coast of Anjuna-Vagator.
The Fort was built by the Sultan of Bijapur in 1560 on the Chapora river to guard the attacks of marathas from west & south.Later the portuguse conquered it & rebuilt the Fort in 1717.During the Portuguese rule the Fort was primarily designed as a refuge place for the people of Bardez in the event of attacks. They also built Chapel of St Anthony there.
This fort is very popular Bollywood destination & lots of shoots were carried out here.
So next time keep some time for visiting this Fort.

GOA EXPLORED-FORT OF TEREKHOL.
Hi again
When you think of Goa we will always talk of the Beaches,Churches & Temples of Goa.actually this tiny state of Goa can offer you much much more than you expect. Now onwards i am exploring the Forts of Goa.
And the journey begins with the strongest of all forts here. The Fort of Terekhol.
This fort was built by the rulers of small kingdom of Sawantwadi on the bank of River Terekhol which is the name of the fort.Since this fort is at the northen tip of Goa it acted as first defence for the rulers of Goa from any attack from the North side by powerful marathas. The Portuguese knew the importance of this Fort & conquered it immediately from the rulers of Sawantwadi. They also built a church within the Fort which is one of the rare things you will see in Indian forts.
Today the fort gives you breathless view of the Terekhol river & the Arabian sea.it has also a heritage hotel there.many tourists visit this fort to take the glimpses of this beautiful place.
From panajim to reach here it takes almost 60-70 minutes by road & it is worth for you to visit this Fort during you next visit to Goa.

GOA EXPLORED-SAFA MASJID
Hi there
the exploration continues.this time i thought of exploring the biggest mosque of Goa.SAFA MASJID.the pilgrimage place for small community of Muslims here.
the Safa Masjid is situated in city of Ponda.it takes 35 minutes to reach here from Panajim.
The Sultan of Bijapur Adil Shah built this beautiful mosque in 1560 ad.this mosque is classic piece of Islamic Architecture with signature arches ,water fountains & gardens.there is also a water tank wihin the premises of the masjid. We are lucky today that this mosque has survived the attacks Maratha's & more so of Portuguese.
the local Muslim community gathers here during the Id festivals.
though this place is not in list of regular tourist hot spots i feel you can take some time out to visit this beautiful piece of Islamic architecture in state of Goa which is dominated by churches & temples.

GOA EXPLORED-GOAN FERRY RIDE
Hi again
one of the very peculiar site when you travel across riverside Goa-evergreen ferry boats moving people from one side of the river to other.the white blue tired ferry boats are true spirit of Goa.villagers from all communities, two wheelers, four wheelers, curious tourists love to take these boats to travel.this state runs service saves lot of time & fuel as well here.
interestingly i have never seen a breakdown ferry which deserves appreciation from all of us.except for some days in peak monsoon this truly Goan transport untiringly serves the people in Goa.the ferry boats runs practically from dawn to dusk.
some of the main ferry's are Panajim -Betim,Old Goa-Divar,Ribandar-Chorao.I like The Old Goa -Diavar ferry most as it takes you thru interesting backdrops.Ribandar is my favourite place since it is overlooking the fresh Mandovi.
so when you are in Goa next don't forget to take at least one ferry ride & enjoy memorable experience.

GOA EXPLORED-MANSOON MAGIC
Hi again
it is always fun to be in Goa during the peak monsoon. It has its own charm & magic to enjoy the wild waves ,heavy rains & some times the furious winds.Today we are visiting my favourite place which is not in Goa but a drive of 120 minutes will take you there.
Yes we are visiting Amobli in neighbouring state of Maharashtra.Take right turn at Sawantwadi on Goa -Mumbai national highway for this green place.Situated on the top of Western Ghats you will reach there in approximately 50 minutes in which half an hour is thru the winding Amboli Ghat .Driving my small maruti car has always excited me.And in peak monsoon believe me you felt like driving in heaven.Clouds some time engulf the traffic to such an extent that it becomes impossible to drive but that is real fun here. You keep on driving up & up awaiting the star of Amobli the Water Fall Of Amboli.Park you car there ,get down & you will see why this place is so magical.Green green & green down below & up above.
If you want drench yourself with water climb up towards the fall & you have it to your limit.Come down after having fun there the local monkeys are waiting for you .Offer a banana & you are allowed to go further.Other than this main water fall there are almost 6 small water falls & if you are lucky you can see all of them from one point while coming down.
Its now lunch time so let us reach the Amboli village.Plenty of choice is available these days. But I prefer the local small shacks on the road. The food is fresh & tasty for hungry souls like us.After some relaxation you can think of visiting Kavleshet for another surprise or other exotic places nearby. And get ready to return back to Goa.
You should visit only in peak monsoon avoid sundays or holidays to enjoy the magical beauty of Amboli.

GOA EXPLORED-SAVE THE JUMPING CHICKEN
Hi again
Come monsoon & the tiny state of Goa gets heavy rains & lots of local tourists. Now there is no tourist season as such in Goa.all the 12 months are flooded with people from India & outside. These tourists have varied interests ranging from drugs to booze & eat.
Goa offers you really tasty non vegetarian food from fish to pork & beef.In order to get more business the food joints offer newer food items. One of such item is this Jumping Chicken Leg which is basically a preparation from the local Frog. These frogs comes out in the vast paddy fields in monsoon to enjoy there bit of life. But unfortunately gets catch ed to satisfy the taste buds of some individuals.
Despite of huge local protests from the local environmentalist groups the catching of these Innocent animals has increased every year. You will not be surprised to see these animals falling in the endangered category in near future. We also know the effects of not having these frogs in the fields but yes we all want fast bucks.
I feel if we as a individual do little bit against this by informing the law enforcing agencies about people catching the frogs in paddy fields near your home or discouraging the food joints to offer the Jumping Chicken Legs in their joints. Its really difficult task but yes we can do it.You all have seen what Save Goa Front did for all of us recently.
Let us do our bit to save this Innocent animal before it becomes too late.

today the prime minister from his red fort address repeated his commitment for the further development of the country & we all should stand behind him to see brighter tomorrow.

GOA EXPLORED-CURRENT AFFAIRS
Hi everybody
for a change we will look into the current affairs scene in Goa & the exploration will continue.
in India the summer season is the holiday season & Goa plays host to ever enthusiastic local tourists.but this year appears to be an exception.despite of the fact that holidays have started almost a month back the season has attracted very few tourists.the hotels are empty ,the beaches are not very crowded & the entire hospitality industry is in worry & is expecting quick revival as monsoon is only a month long.
the reason could be very very hot summer in India this year.Goa is also very very hot specially in the afternoons. lets us hope the things changes soon again we will see crowded beaches & people enjoying the fun in the land of SUN,SAND & SEA.
in Goa this summer is the summer of local elections & so the political atmosphere is also very hot.both the national parties in Goa are claiming that the next government is theirs but we will not know what the smart voter in Goa will do.To get clear picture we will have to wait till first week of June.
i am hoping to see the things changing very soon & you all enjoying the colourful, vibrant Goa.

GOA EXPLORED-BOGDESHWARA TEMPLE ,MAPUSA.
Hi again this post has taken little longer but the exploration of Goa continues.
when you enter Mapausa city from Panajim you will find a recently built temple on the left side of the road in the open grounds. And this is the famous temple of Baba Kanakeshwara worshipped by the Goans as Lord Bogdeshwara. It is believed that the Baba Kanankeshara is the guardian of the city of Mapausa in the dark nights.
If you happen to perform a pooja here you will notice that it is very different from the poojas in the other temples all over the Goa.The priest performs the pooja & the sermons are pronounced in very peculiar way which makes you feel the might of Baba Knankeshwara.
It is believed that the Baba blesses every one who is in need & prays from the heart.
Every year there is fest of Lord Bogdeshwara & the locals participate enthusiastically.

GOA EXPLORED-Procession of Saints
Hi again
Goa exploration continues.
This unique but relatively unnoticed event popularly known as Procession Of Saints takes place at Saint Andrews Church ,Goa Velha during the period of lent.I am told that this is one of the very few festivals which takes place during the lent. Also unique about this festival is that the only place in the world where this festival is held is Rome.
I saw this procession 2 years back one evening while returning back from my work at Industrial area of Verna.Out of curiosity i talked about this procession with my friends in Goa & could get very good insight.
This place Goa Velha is some 8/10 kms from capital city of Panajim. On 26,Th march 2007,which was also first Monday of Easter week this unique procession took place. The village of Goa Velha adores looks of festivities & lots of local people gather to take part in the procession.
The procession starts before the sunset after a sermon from the priest of Saint Andrews Church. And you see 30 life size statues of saints dressed in colourful costumes of those days comes out in procession.People gathered queue along the route & actually pass under the statues as the procession moves along.I am told this also is a unique feature of festival. The people gathered touch the statues & take the blessings of the Saints. After the procession all these statues are kept in veneration for 3 days at the Church.
I am told that this procession has centuries old tradition & highlights the unselfish work carried out by these saints for the poor or masses.During the Portuguese rule this procession was stopped for some time but again restatrted in 19 Th century.
Indeed a really unique feast for the village of Goa Velha..Goa......India

INDIA IN TEARS
And finally the unthinkable happened.India made humiliating exit from the Cricket World Cup 2007.India is virtually out of the competition & only god can help them to come back which nobody really wants.
we Indians are great fans of this game of cricket & it is a religion to us.we worship the great players.here we are feeling let down by our team & we are finding who is responsible for this, the captain, the coach or the senior players?may be all of them are responsible but now the time has gone.
i want to see this in little different perspective & i feel we Indians in general lack in following qualities which is really making the difference in the world beaters & losers.
1.never believe in ourselves.
2.are not great team players.
3.carry huge egos everywhere.
4.lack in aggressiveness due to lack of confidence.
5.don't have killer instincts.
6.are not hard working
7.don't learn from the mistakes .
8.nobody takes the accountability for defeats or failures.
9.consistency is not our cup of tea.
now i honestly believe that if each one of us try to improve on these qualities in every aspect of life be it professional ,be it personal or anything else we lack in & imbibe these into our generation next you will see a sea change around you.but the beginning has to come from you.
lets us try it & i am sure India will be World Champion not only in Cricket but in every walk of the life.and we are truly capable of doing it.......

GOA EXPLORED-SHREE RUDESHWAR TEMPLE OF HARVALEM
Hi again
our exploration of Beautiful Goa continues.I am taking you to the Shree Rudeshwar Temple of Harvalem.Come monsoon & this is one of my favorite places to visit.Almost 50 kms from the capital city of Panajim is situated in Bicholim Taluka & the close to village Sanquelim is this Temple where the lord Shree Rudeshwara is overlooking the Water falls of Harvalem. You need to walk down some steps if you wish (you can avoid these steps also) which will lead you the temple. While stepping down you will be accompanied by noisy falling water which is not visible.Take darshana of the Lord Shree Rudreshwara come out & walk towards the noise.
Oh my god ,you are in front of the famous Harvalem water falls.A thick stream of water falls almost 50 meters & the water droplets are creating colourful rainbow. The stream is invisible in the surrounding green trees.unless you come here you cannot see the waterfalls. In the month of monsoon the water fall is really worth watching. You can relax for some time here before you start the back journey.
This temple of Shree Rudeshwara assumes very high importance since the hindus performs the rites of dead here.Like all the temples of mahadeva here also the main festival is Mahashivratri.
Now on way back you have choice of visiting the rock cut caves of Arvalem which is only 5/6 kms away from this place.
I think you will be able to see a water fall & temple together like this any where else so don't forget to visit this place in your next visit to Goa.
Bye.

GOA EXPLORED-TAMBDI SURLA TEMPLE
Hi once again,
one of the few exotic places i have seen in Goa & that mesmerised me is undoubtedly the Mahadeva Temple Of Tambdi Surla.
situated on the foothills of Anmod Ghat & on the bank of small Ragada river is this exotic temple which is built by the Kadamba Dynasty in 12 th century.
the temple is constructed in black basalt stone in Jain Style.this is the only temple left now in balck basalt.i am not sure but this style could be even Hemadpanthy as the temple top is incomplete.the temple has beautiful carvings on the stone.
the temple is situated away in dense green forest & when i visited last in monsoon it was a treat to watch this temple at the backdrop of Western Ghats & i could never forget the beautiful site.
the temple has three entrances which leads you to garbhagraha.the main festival here is Mahashivratri & lot of local devotees visit the temple.
from panajim this exotic place is almost 60 kms & 15 kms from molem.the road shows the directions to reach here & i am sure you will be mesmerised to see this black basalt beauty.
